This kit consists of pre-cut parts that are easy to assemble. 18 metal frets are pre-installed. The fretboard fits into slots cut in the hoop, and the disk of plywood glues on top of the fretboard and the hoop. The hoop is a cylindrical section of industrial strength mailing tube one quarter inch thick. Detailed instructions are included with illustrations. Not counting drying time, it should take you around 2 hours to make your own banjo.
You will need to finish the plywood (polyurathane, varnish, or finising oil), sand and finish the fretboard (we recommend Watco oil), and paint the hoop with latex paint. Then you hammer in 5 little nails, screw in 10 little Phillips head screws, put on strings, and clip their ends with a wire cutter. You furnish glue, finishing liquids, and the tools.
A fretless model is also available, with inlaid markers at the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, and 12th fret position |
