For outdoor picking, the Boston rings out loud and clear. The thick, steel rim, unique to the Deering line, produces a sound similar to a bronze tone-ring. The result is a more affordable banjo. Made in USA.
Compare the Boston sound to other banjos in the same price range. It offers exceptional tone far superior to the tone of the die-cast brass tone-rings or aluminum rims of the imports. You'll progress much faster and enjoy playing more with a Boston compared to a lower priced import that's hard to play. The Boston banjo makes playing easier because the banjo works with you, not against you. The Boston also has the sweet sound of mahogany with less sustain than a maple or walnut banjo. Crisp highs and good bass response with less overtones than many banjos. Easy to play with clarity of note separation. Great for recording.
The Boston has the same adjustable mahogany neck, Ebony fingerboard and mother-of-pearl inlays, and satin finish as the Deering Sierra. The primary difference is in the drum assembly which is a 3/16" thick steel rim but rings like a tone-ring. The 24-piece flange and steel rim produce a very enjoyable tone. The Boston features high-quality sealed guitar-style tuners because they provide a 6:1 gear ratio for accuracy in tuning. The fifth peg is geared as well. The 24-piece flange design allows you to convert this banjo to open-back by removing the flange pieces and resonator.
Note: Our banjos are individually inspected, set up and tuned by the banjo.com staff in Georgia. We are banjo players, so we set them up the way we want to play them! Each banjo is in tune when we carefully pack it for shipment. Climate conditions and travel will affect the tuning, so it may need to be fine-tuned before playing.
