For outdoor picking, the Boston rings out loud and clear. The thick, steel rim, unique to the Deering line, produces a sound similar to a bronze tone-ring. The result is a more affordable banjo. Made in USA. Hardshell case included.

Compare the Boston sound to other banjos in the same price range. It offers exceptional tone far superior to the tone of the die-cast brass tone-rings or aluminum rims of the imports. You'll progress much faster and enjoy playing more with a Boston compared to a lower priced import that's hard to play. The Boston banjo makes playing easier because the banjo works with you, not against you. The Boston also has the sweet sound of mahogany with less sustain than a maple or walnut banjo.

Crisp highs and good bass response with less overtones than many banjos. Easy to play with clarity of note separation. Great for recording. The Boston has the same adjustable mahogany neck, Ebony fingerboard and mother-of-pearl inlays, and satin finish as the Deering Sierra. The primary difference is in the drum assembly which is a 3/16" thick steel rim but rings like a tone-ring.

The 24-piece flange and steel rim produce a very enjoyable tone. The Boston features high-quality sealed guitar-style tuners because they provide a 6:1 gear ratio for accuracy in tuning. The fifth peg is geared as well. The 24-piece flange design allows you to convert this banjo to open-back by removing the flange pieces and resonator.

Want railroad spikes? We install HO-gauge railroad spikes free when you purchase a banjo from us. We recommend installing them on frets 7 and 9 (A and B). This serves as a capo for the 5th string, an idea that was developed and used by Earl Scruggs himself. We use them, and so do most of the professional players we know. When you're playing, you don't really notice the spikes because they're out of the way, but they're always there when you need them. Simply slide the 5th string under the spike. When you're done, slide it out. If you want spikes, let us know in the comments box at checkout.

Note: Our banjos are individually inspected, set up and tuned by the staff in Georgia. We are banjo players, so we set them up the way we want to play them! Each banjo is in tune when we carefully pack it for shipment. Climate conditions and travel will affect the tuning, so it may need to be fine-tuned before playing.
