Earl Scruggs joined Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys in 1945; his new and unique style of 3-finger banjo picking instantly electrified audiences from coast to coast.
Clawhammer (also called traditional or folk)-style banjo playing is much more mellow than bluegrass.  Players pick with only two fingers, usually the thumb and index finger.
4-String Banjos Mandolin
Dixieland Jazz music, later called Dixieland, was developed in New Orleans by acts such as Jelly Roll Morton and Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong.
